Farming Innovation Programme winner Antler Bio pioneering research on cattle epigenetics

May 5, 2022 By Mark Clayton

Antler Bio

Unlocking the potential | Improving performance | Increasing well-being | Improving sustainability |
Through epigenetics.

Our technology.

Genes are the recipes for proteins, which in turn are the key building blocks in the body. Conventional genetic testing will only look at whether a certain gene is present but not determine if this gene is active or silent. If a gene is silent, the protein that this gene encodes for will not be produced.

What if an important gene is switched off?

DNA testing does not detect this.

DNA doesn’t give the full story. We are delivering the missing data.

Performance and well-being is not about genetics alone, it’s also about the environmental factors and how the animal reacts to and can cope with its surroundings.
Our technology allows us to not only detect which genes are present but also which ones are active and their level of expression.
It allows us to also identify which environmental factors trigger changes in this gene expression allowing game-changing decisions to be made based on the data.

This is epigenetics.

From a single sample we can:

  • Analyse heritability and assess potential
  • Determine which changes in habitat will increase performance
  • Detect developing diseases before symptoms occur

FAQs

  • What is Epigenetics?
  • Why the cattle industry?

We are unlocking this big data through complex bioinformatics, machine-learning and artificial intelligence.

Complex traits require complex analysis. The performance of any given animal is a complex equation, impossible to explain by only looking at single changes in the DNA. The epigenetics data brings us closer to understanding the molecular blueprint of the best and healthiest individuals, but the biggest reason why this data has been inaccessible to breeders so far is the sheer magnitude of it.

Contact us.

Our technology is scalable to any living species and we are expanding. We are especially interested in connecting with stakeholders from different livestock and agricultural industries as well as funds that invest into disruptive seed-stage companies.

Digital Sandwich – details of Tatton’s £10m project

October 26, 2021 By Mark Clayton

Developing a modular value chain platform utilising DLT, IoT and AI to encourage a step change in manufacturing productivity, consumer safety, financing and trust within the food supply chain.

To demonstrate the benefits and value of the digitalisation of the food supply chain, the Digital Sandwich project will create an open multi-party software platform connecting organisations across the ready made food supply and value chain – from primary production to retail.  Ultimately, the demonstrator created by the project will be accessible to thousands of SMEs in the UK’s food supply chain for whom the technology would previously be out of reach.

Led by Raynor Foods, a leading UK sandwich maker, the Digital Sandwich project will exploit advanced digital technologies to revolutionise the UK’s supply chain for ready made food. This world first project is a cross-sector collaboration of manufacturers, food industry partners, industrial digital technology suppliers, universities, and trade and governmental organisations.

Some of the key priorities for the future of supply chains include:

  • Collaboration and sharing information to help reduce the negative impacts of shocks and strengthen supply chain adaptability, flexibility and resiliency in the long run.
  • Increased transparency and visibility to monitor the flow of products, money and information across the entire supply chain, delivering a virtual audit and end to end continuous assurance capabilities.
  • Supply chain optimisation, including artificial intelligence (AI) models to optimise supply chain inventory, improve services and reduce waste. Additionally this will lead to the standardisation of commercial terms, financing and settlement enabling the complete automation of data across supply chains.

As well as the benefits of reducing food waste by 10%, increasing productivity by 10% and significantly reducing the cost of capital and inventory for producers and retailers, consumers will benefit from the increased safety and traceability of ready-made food, improving public health and public trust in the food supply chain.

What can I say, the guys at Tatton are outstanding at what they do. Their ability to understand your business, their knowledge of the grant space, and their ability to combine the two into compelling well matched grant applications is itself worth getting in touch. But add to that their success rate, then it makes it a no brainer. Tatton has already had a substantial hand in the success of our own technology company funding to date and will no doubt continue to long into the future.
