Tatton Consulting supported London-based hormone biosensing company Impli in its successful application to the NIHR Invention for Innovation (i4i), awarded £1,400,000 for the project BEAM (Bio-Endocrine Analysis Monitor).
About the funded R&D project
IVF success rates sit between 15% and 32%, and clinicians make time-critical dosing decisions on hormone values that may already be 24 to 48 hours old. LH surges determining egg release, progesterone dips causing implantation failure and early signs of ovarian hyperstimulation are routinely missed by single-point blood tests. BEAM is a microneedle patch worn on the upper arm that measures estradiol, LH and progesterone continuously in interstitial fluid using aptamer-based electrochemical biosensors, transmitting to a smartphone where AI converts the raw signal into hormone trends. The 30-month programme runs with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, King’s College London, Fertility Europe and TTP, and covers design and manufacture to ISO 13485, a 25-participant pilot study, AI model development and regulatory groundwork for NHS adoption. Impli reports the approach could cut clinic visits per cycle from as many as ten to as few as two.
