About the funded R&D project
The UK has no facility capable of sorting and recycling mixed garment waste at industrial scale, which is why most of it is exported or landfilled. This project builds one: a low-carbon garment recycling plant integrating the AI sorting technology developed across KAPDAA’s earlier projects, with digital product passport integration so that a garment’s fibre composition travels with it. Digital passports become a regulatory requirement across the EU this decade, and a recycling facility that can read and write them is positioned very differently from one that cannot. At £4.8m over two years, this is the largest award in a sequence running from a £49,883 feasibility study in 2023.
