Who actually wins Growth Catalyst? What the funded projects data shows

Growth Catalyst is Innovate UK’s £130m replacement for the funding routes that closed when Smart Grants paused. The headline number suggests a substantial programme. The award data shows something more specific, and applicants planning around the £130m figure are likely to be planning for the wrong thing.

Investor Partnerships Round 213£399,076£92,366–£867,744£5.9m

Early Stage is high-volume and capped. The median is £49,850, the upper quartile is £49,994, and the maximum is exactly £50,000. Three quarters of awards land within £800 of the cap. This is a fixed-value grant in practice, whatever the guidance says about costing your project.

Investor Partnerships is a different proposition entirely: thirteen awards, a median eight times higher, and a top award of £867,744. It also requires an approved Innovate UK investor partner and demonstrated traction before you can apply, which is a gate most Early Stage applicants would not clear.

Every Early Stage winner was a micro or small business

Of 194 Early Stage awards, all 194 went to organisations classified as micro or small, and all 194 were sole lead applicants. There are no collaborative projects and no medium or large enterprises in the funded set. If you are a medium-sized company, or your project needs a research partner, this strand is not built for you regardless of how well it fits on paper.

London took 63 of 194 Early Stage awards, roughly a third, and the greater South East accounts for 117 between them, or 60%. Investor Partnerships is more evenly spread across its thirteen awards, with Wales, Yorkshire, the North East and the North West all represented.

Regional concentration in the funded set is not evidence that applicants elsewhere are marked down. It reflects where micro and small innovation companies are registered. It does mean a company outside the South East is competing in a smaller regional cohort, which matters if you are looking for local partners or comparators.

What Growth Catalyst does not replace

Smart Grants funded at a median of £315,118 across 1,912 projects, with collaborative projects at £353,427. Growth Catalyst Early Stage funds at a sixth of that. Investor Partnerships funds at a comparable level but has made thirteen awards to date and gates entry on private investment.

The open, sector-agnostic route at around £300,000 has no direct successor. For most companies the practical alternative is a themed competition matched to the technology area, which means starting from the funder’s published scope rather than from your project.

Method and limitations

Records were grouped by project number and grant values summed across all participants, so a collaborative project counts once at its full value. Projects with zero or missing grant values were excluded. Figures cover awards recorded as at 10 August 2026 and will rise as later rounds are published. Competition naming has changed over the period covered, so competition-level groupings rely on title matching. Values are those offered at the funding decision and may differ from amounts finally drawn. The dataset covers Innovate UK awards only.
