Tatton Consulting supported Hackney-based carbon capture and cement materials company Cocoon Carbon in its successful application to SBRI: Decarbonising concrete, which was awarded £433,106 by Innovate UK for the project EAFSCM – New SCM composed of slag and CO2 byproducts of electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production.
About the funded R&D project
As UK steelmaking shifts from blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces, the supply of ground granulated blast furnace slag used in low-carbon cement falls away. Cocoon Carbon’s carbon capture and storage process upcycles slag from electric arc furnace production into a supplementary cementitious material. Over a 12-month programme the project scales production from grams to 300kg across three melt batches using the Materials Processing Institute’s electric arc furnace, while holding cementitious performance and commercial viability.
