About the funded R&D project
South Africa’s power crisis produces rolling blackouts of up to six hours a day, constraining economic growth and deepening inequality. This Energy Catalyst project assessed the feasibility of seawater pumped hydroelectric storage, which uses the ocean as the lower reservoir and removes the freshwater constraint on conventional pumped hydro.
